Every Director brings their own magic when on set and Joe Pernice is no exception. His ability to create, imagine, and think outside the box to craft visuals is incredible. Cardboard Spaceship is very proud to work alongside Joe Pernice. So take a moment and meet the man, the myth, the legend:

Q: Can you tell us a little bit about you?

A: My name is Joe Pernice. I was born and raised in NY. I have always loved film. In fact, when I was younger I used to go around my parents house with their camera pretending to make my own movies. Throughout my childhood, that creativity never left. I knew that once I graduate high school that that was what I wanted to pursue. So, after graduating, I attended NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts honed my skills as a creative. I was able to work on some incredible projects and actually directed an award winning short film.

After graduating college, I ended up getting a job at Robert Dinero’s production company and working under some of the most talented producers and directors I have ever seen. It was there that I learned about the ambitions of filmmaking and what it took to make your own movie. I learned as much as I could and at the age of 26, I decided to write my own screenplay and take it to market. When I got funded, I left my job at Tribeca and have never looked back.

Most recently I was a quarterfinalist for Academy of Nicholl Fellowship for my screenplay The Night Between Us and have been honored at major award shows as one of the best up-and-coming Directors of the year.

Q: What’s your favorite spot you have done in the last 2 years?

A: I would have to say that my favorite commercial production in the last couple of years would be the Bojangles Holiday Season commercials. I was really excited about the opportunity because who doesn’t like to shoot food? Come on!

Q: What challenges have you overcome to get your favorite spot done?

We filmed this commercial in the fall of 2020 so all the obstacles of the pandemic were still a real challenge. Safety of the talent on set was a huge concern, especially the children. So, we cast an actual family to make sure talent was comfortable performing in close quarters without masks. Take a look:

Q: What was your favorite part of production?

A: Being on set. It’s like gameday. We practice for all those weeks for the moment we start filming. It’s great to see the well-oiled machine at work and everything we planned during prep come alive.

Q: What makes a great director?

I think great directors are people that are able to take words on a page and bring it to life in the most interesting, entertaining, and impactful way. They work great with people on set to draw the best out of everyone. They have the ability to accomplish the creative task even when there’s not enough time to get things right. It’s their ability to be a perfectionist without sacrificing the production schedule. That’s what I feel makes a great director.

Q: What makes you a great director?

Everything I just said above, lol. Just kidding. In all honesty, I think what makes me a great director is being involved in all aspects, from pre-production through post. I don’t just show up on the day to film. I like to make sure that I get involved as early on as possible to help craft the story and develop the idea. I also love working in the edit room to find the best takes and performances.

Q: What’s your favorite food?

Pizza! It’s actually my nickname.

Q: What’s your favorite color?

Steel Gray because it looks cool on an Aston Martin

Q: What’s your 90’s online dating profile one-liner?!

They call me Pizza because I’m always hot and fresh…come take a slice. (damn this is pathetic. I was too young to date in the 90s)
