In late 2021, CyrusOne agreed to be acquired by KKR and Global Infrastructure Partners in what was then the largest transaction in the history of the data center sector. The company would move from the public markets into private ownership. Coverage in the trade press treated it as a capital markets story, which it was. Analysts read the multiple. Competitors read the signal. The industry read a sector-defining moment for digital infrastructure.

Inside the company, employees read something else entirely. They read a question about their own future.

CyrusOne had operated more than 40 data centers and served a customer base that included a large share of the Fortune 1000. It had also cycled through several chief executives in a short window before a co-founder returned to lead the business. The acquisition arrived on top of that. For thousands of people building, powering, and running mission critical facilities, the news landed as uncertainty first and opportunity second.

That gap is the problem CyrusOne asked us to solve.

The Approach

We proposed a two-film series rather than a single message. One video is a statement. Two videos, built to work together, become a narrative.

The first film centers on the core values of the business. The second shows what it actually feels like to work there. The sequence matters. Values without evidence read as a poster on a break room wall. Evidence without a frame reads as a highlight reel. Placed in order, the first film sets the standard and the second one proves it.

Both films were built for internal use, which changed every production decision we made. Internal audiences are the toughest audience a company has. They already know the truth. Anything overproduced, overwritten, or over-promised gets rejected on contact. The work had to feel true before it could feel inspiring.

Film One: The Values

The values film establishes what the company believes and why those beliefs exist. We treated the values as operating principles rather than marketing language. Each one was grounded in a real decision, a real standard, or a real behavior that employees would recognize from their own day.

Visually, we leaned on the scale and physical presence of the facilities themselves. Data centers photograph beautifully when you respect them. The rows, the light, the cooling, the sheer size of the build all carry meaning without narration. We used that scale to make a simple argument. This is serious work, done by serious people, held to a standard that ownership does not set.

Film Two: Life Inside CyrusOne

The second film hands the story to employees. Rather than describing the culture, it lets people show it. The result is a portrait of the working environment, the pace, the pride in technical execution, and the relationships that hold teams together across sites.

This is the film that carries the emotional weight of the series. It answers the question employees were actually asking after the announcement, which was never really about the deal structure. It was about whether the place they work would still be the place they know.

The Takeaway

If your company is heading into an acquisition, a take-private, a spin-off, or a leadership transition, ask a direct question. What are employees going to see, and when are they going to see it?

If the answer is a memo and a town hall, there is a gap. Film closes it.
